Who Should Get A Massage?
Everyone can derive benefit from having a massage, whether it be a Swedish Massage to reduce stress, improve circulation and encourage a feeling of well being or Myofascial or Trigger Point Therapy to achieve relief from acute or chronic pain. (You can also have a massage to pamper yourself!)

What Should I Bring With Me And What Should I Wear During The Massage?
Healthy Outlook Therapists will provide the massage table, linens, and scented or unscented oil (whichever you prefer). Since you are covered with sheets during your massage, it is best if you remove all clothing. Your modesty is preserved at all times. If, however, removing your clothing would make you uncomfortable, feel free to wear a swim suit, underwear, running shorts, etc. Your relaxation and comfort level are most important.

What Type Of Massage Should I Tell The Therapist That I Want?
The therapist will take you to the treatment room and talk with you about the work you would like him/her to perform. Let them know if you have a certain problem area such as back, neck, shoulders, etc. or would simply prefer a quiet relaxing massage. It is also possible to enjoy a combination of therapies such as doing some specific work, known as Myofascial or Trigger Point Therapy, on one area and finishing with a relaxing Swedish Massage.

What Do I Do Once I Get In The Room?
The Therapist will explain where to hang your clothing, and will also provide a basket or tray for jewelry, glasses, etc. The therapist will then indicate how he/she prefers to begin the massage by having you lie either on your back or your stomach, leave the room, and allow a few minutes for you to get ready before knocking and asking your permission to re-enter the room.

What Should I Do During The Massage?
JUST RELAX! Let yourself be pampered. Don’t try to help with the massage. When it is time for your arm to be lifted, let it be lifted for you. When your head has to be turned to the side, the therapist will turn it for you. If the therapist needs your assistance, they will ask you. If at anytime you feel uncomfortable, let the therapist know. Remember this time is for you!

I Would Prefer Not To Have My Scalp Or Face Massaged Since I Need To Go Back To Work. Is That Ok?
This is your massage. Feel free to let the therapist know about areas that you do not want massaged. For a Swedish Massage the therapist will usually massage head, neck, shoulders, back, arms, hands, chest, abdomen, legs and feet unless otherwise requested.

Should I Talk During A Massage?
That is completely up to you. The therapist will take your lead. It is suggested that paying attention to your breathing and taking slow, deep breaths will help you to relax completely as does being in tune with the therapist’s touch. Sometimes it is difficult to relax well while trying to carry on a conversation. Always speak up if anything is physically hurting you; or you feel uncomfortable in any way.

Does A Massage Ever Hurt?
Although you may feel some pressure in certain areas, a massage should never “hurt”. It is very important to communicate with the therapist if the pressure is too much or not enough. The therapist will periodically check with you by asking how the pressure is and if certain spots are tender. He/she depends on you to communicate those needs, so feel free to do so.

How Often Can I Get A Massage?
Regular massage benefits everyone! Following your treatment, your therapist will leave the room, allow you to dress, and then re-enter to discuss your feelings on the massage and any findings that she/he may have. At that time, a treatment plan can be discussed. Therapeutic work can and will ease pain. Once the pain subsides, maintenance work will benefit you so the pain will not come back or at least not come back at the same level. Everyone benefits from regular massage for relaxation and stress reduction.
